about

This composition started our as a challenge to myself as a way of getting my creative juices flowing. I decided to try and make a composition which modulated through each of the twelve keys in both major and minor modes, with the restriction that I could only stay in one scale for eight bars and in that eight bars I needed to play the tonic chord twice while also using a unique chord progression for each scale rather than finding a suitable one and transposing it twenty four times. I was pleasantly surprised with the piece that emerged from the exercise, and was listening to the composition as a whole for the first time in order to hear it's personality and learn its name. I heard it's rhythmic instability and seeming battle to find a staple tempo throughout, every modulation alternates between major and minor and the tonal ambiguity of the piece really stood out as I listened- at times triumphant and at times defeated and at other times almost sinister. And overall it is very cinematic and seems to have this epic struggle throughout, although the ending remains ambiguous and without resolution. And in seeing and hearing all that, I finally understood- I had been composing an homage to 2020 and telling the story in the music
